Join us for a walking tour through La Kalsa, the historic Arab-origin neighborhood in the heart of Palermo.
We'll explore some of its most significant landmarks, including the Norman Church of Magione, the 14th-century Palazzo Chiaramonte, once the seat of the Spanish Inquisition, and the Renaissance Palazzo Abatellis.
Along the way, we’ll delve into the neighborhood's tumultuous history, from the devastating bombings of 1943 to the post-World War II attempts at speculative development. We'll also honor the legacy of magistrates Falcone and Borsellino, both born here, and discuss the ongoing cultural revival that has taken root, marked by the restoration of sites like Palazzo Butera, now home to the Valsecchi collection, as well as various street art initiatives, both spontaneous and institutionally coordinated.
The ADM 2024 organizers invite you to attend the welcome drink, which will be served starting at 7:30 PM at the "Giardini del Massimo"
Address:
Piazza Verdi, 90138 Palermo PA
Enjoy a guided tour of the monumental Palazzo dei Normanni, once the residence of Norman rulers and, since 1947, the seat of political power as the home of the Sicilian Regional Assembly.
A highlight of this visit is the Palatine Chapel, the palace church founded by Norman King Ruggero II after his coronation in 1130.
The chapel is a remarkable example of the fusion of Latin, Byzantine, and Arab artistic traditions. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the gardens adjoining the Palazzo dei Normanni and visit the 'Thesaurus' exhibition, which delves into the period of Norman rule in Sicily.
Our second stop of the day will be the Cathedral, originally constructed during the Norman period and transformed multiple times over the centuries. Both the Palazzo and the Cathedral are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, celebrated for their unique blend of artistic traditions.
Tour start: 9:00 AM in front of Palazzo dei Normanni (on the Piazza del Parlamento side), where the guides will be holding a sign with 'B@rneo Viaggi.' The walking tour will last approximately 4 hours and will end at the exit of the Cathedral of Palermo, where entrance will be managed by the guides Marilù and Gino.
